Meeting our Immunization Requirements

Proof of Measles Immunity

Western students born after December 31, 1956 are required to provide proof of measles immunity with documentation of one of the following:

  1. Written documentation of two doses of measles vaccine (typically MMR) given
    • after January 1, 1968;
    • at least 30 days apart; and
    • on or after 12 months of age
  2. Health Care Provider verification of  two doses of measles vaccine (typically MMR) given. Have your health care provider complete the Measles Immunity Report Form – Provider Verification of Immunization.

  3. A copy of a rubeola titer blood test result showing measles immunity.

  4. A copy of your DD-214, if you served in the military.

Find and Submit Your Documentation

To make this process easier for you, we will securely retrieve your immunization records directly from the Washington State Immunization Information System (WAIIS).

For any student immunized in Washington State, WWU will access your immunization records for the sole purpose of verifying your compliance with university immunization requirements. This helps ensure that you meet state and university health guidelines without needing to locate and submit these records yourself.

If you do not want the WWU Student Health Center to have access to your immunization records you need to opt-out of the data exchange with the Washington State Department of Health.  You can learn more about this state-wide data exchange program on their website here: Information About the Immunization Information System | Washington State Department of Health

If you want to opt-out of the data exchange program you need to complete the opt-out actions 1 week before you pay your admissions fee.  To opt out fill out the PDF form located on DOH website here: Opting Out of the Immunization Information System Data Exchange.

Learn more about the opt-out process

Please note that your records will be handled in accordance with all state and federal privacy regulations to protect your personal information.

You will need to locate your vaccine records.  We accept any of the following as proof of measles immunity:

  1. Immunization records from your doctor’s office - bring a print out of your proof of immunization or have your doctor fill out and sign our Measles Immunity Report Form
  2. A copy of your School Certification of Immunization
  3. A copy of your military immunization record or the DD214
  4. A copy of a stamped immunization card
  5. MMR shot dates recorded on high school transcripts
  6. A copy of an immunization record from your public health department

If you know you were vaccinated you will need to get a rubeola titer blood test. The result should be positive which will show your measles immunity.  You can upload the test result in your MyWesternHealth patient portal.

If you haven’t ever been given the measles vaccine, you can get it, along with any other necessary immunizations, from your primary care provider’s office, some pharmacies, walk-in clinics, your local public health department or here at the Student Health Center.

The vaccine is a 2-part series.  Once you get your first vaccine you will be given a temporary waiver until you are able to get your second vaccine.  After you provide proof of your second vaccination you will be cleared completely for this immunization requirement.

To manually submit your vaccine records:

  1. Locate your vaccine records prior to registration
  2. Upload them in your MyWesternHealth patient portal
    1. Log in with your WWU email and password.
    2. Click “Medical Clearances” in the menu column on the left.
    3. Locate “Measles” and click the green “Update” button.
    4. Carefully follow the simple two-step instructions at the top of the screen.
  3. Staff Members will review the records within 3 business days and clear you if the records meet our clearance requirements
  4. Once you are cleared you will be able to register for classes

If you do not submit complete documentation, you will not be able to register for classes.

NOTICE:  It is illegal to submit fraudulent or counterfeit vaccination records under  WAC 504-26-202

More About the Washington Immunization Information System (WAIIS)

WWU takes part in the WAIIS Data Exchange Program. This online registry helps healthcare providers and schools maintain accurate immunization records for people of all ages. Vaccinations provided at participating locations in the State of Washington are uploaded to WAIIS.

The WAIIS system is a secure, web-based tool that healthcare providers and schools use. All information in WAIIS is secure and confidential. Other information, such as past immunization records and demographics, are included in the registry to ensure your record is accurate and cannot be confused with another person. You can contact WAIIS to opt out of storing your immunization information. Read more about accessing and managing your immunization records.

What if I decide to opt out?

To opt out of the Washington State Data Exchange you must fill out an Opt-Out Form.  You will be opted out of the program within 2 business days of completing the form.  After the process is completed, you will receive a confirmation email/letter from the Washington State Department of Health.

Once a patient has been opted out, the information is completely removed from the Washington State Immunization Information System. The only way it can be added back into the system is if the patient’s doctor re-enters the information. Additionally, if the patient goes to a clinic for any kind of vaccination the patient must tell the pharmacist or health care provider that they do not want their vaccination record entered into WAIIS. If not stated, then that one vaccine will be added back in to the WAIIS.

If you have more questions you can contact the WAIIS Records Department at WAIISRecords@doh.wa.gov

Frequently Asked Questions

All students including those who are taking 100% of their courses remotely or online must meet Western Washington University's Measles Immunity Requirement. A hold on registration and access to housing will be imposed until the appropriate records are provided to the Student Health Center.

If you believe you have submitted all of your measles information but you are still not cleared, check the "Medical Clearances" tab in your MyWesternHealth patient portal.  For each line item if you see:

  • "Not Compliant / Awaiting Review": you have provided the dates of your vaccines/tests but did not send your supporting documentation.  Action needed: upload your documents now.
  • "Not Compliant / Not Satisfied": we do not have any information to clear you.  Action needed: upload both the dates of your vaccines/tests and documents supporting those dates now.

Students who have not provided proof of measles immunity to the Student Health Center will have a hold placed on their student account and will not be able to register for classes.  A hold placed on the student account also prevents a student from living in on-campus housing. We will remove the hold on your account once we receive and process your documents.

Make sure you meet this requirement as soon as possible to avoid delay in your registration process!

If you haven’t ever been given the measles vaccine, you can get it, along with any other necessary immunizations, from your primary care provider’s office, some pharmacies, walk-in clinics, your local public health department or here at the Student Health Center.

The Student Health Center provides new and current students the MMR vaccine and the rubeola titer blood test when classes are in session (see Location & Hours).  Costs for these services can be found in the Costs/Charges section of our website.

If you have a medical or religious reason for not meeting the Measles Clearance Requirement you will need to complete and file a Measles Vaccine Waiver.

Follow these important steps:

  1. Log in to your MyWesternHealth patient portal.
  2. Click “Downloadable Forms” in the menu column on the left.
  3. Locate the “Measles Vaccine Waiver Request” section.
  4. Download the form, fill it out, and sign it.
  5. Upload the form in the same location using the "Upload" button.
  6. Click "Save" at the bottom of the screen.

The waiver will be reviewed and you will be cleared after the waiver is approved.  Please allow one week for waiver processing.

Exceptions may also be granted to non-degree seekers taking only coursework offered remotely or through distance learning.
